The golden rule with children is that lots of bites beat big fish. A busy afternoon catching small roach and rudd will do far more to hook a child on fishing than a long wait for something bigger. Keep the session short to begin with — a couple of hours of action is perfect — and always finish while they are still enjoying it.
Target the right fish
Our Canal Lake is ideal for families, with steady sport from roach, rudd and skimmer bream. Simple float fishing with maggots or a grain of corn will bring regular bites, which is exactly what keeps young anglers excited and engaged.
Let them do it
Children learn by doing. Within reason, let them bait the hook, hold the rod, watch the float and strike at bites — even if it means a few tangles along the way. The sense of achievement when they land a fish they caught themselves is what brings them back. Be ready to help with unhooking and handling, and show them how to treat each fish gently.
Comfort keeps them happy
A comfortable child is a happy child. Pack plenty of snacks and drinks, sun cream and a hat in summer, warm layers in cooler weather, and somewhere comfy to sit. Little breaks for a snack or a wander are all part of the fun and stop young anglers getting restless.
